Workshops offered for the public:  May & June 2009.

For answers to questions about these workshops or to register for a workshop, call 608-242-4900. You must sign up in advance to attend a workshop. The dates and the times when specific workshops are offered follow the descriptions below.  

ABC's of Re-employment Workshop  Stressed? Angry? Anxious? Worried? Depressed? Learn proven techniques for taking the fear factor out of job change and redirecting your energy to objective goal setting and informed decision making. No Workshop on current schedule.

Apprenticeship: Earn While You Learn - Careers in the building trades pay $22K - $33K to start…no experience required! If you like to learn by doing, work with your hands, solve problems, and see concrete results? Then an apprenticeship in construction is the place to start!  Offered June 9, 3:00 - 4:30 PM.

Career Exploration Workshop Confused about your career interests?  Ever wonder what career areas would be truly of interest to you?  This workshop will get you started now!  Offered May 14 and June 11, 1:00 - 3:00 PM.

Cover Letter Workshop – Learn the basics of writing an effective cover letter. Receive tips on acceptable formats, styles, and ways to avoid common blunders. Participants will have the opportunity to practice writing a cover letter. Offered May 20th and June 17, 9:30 - 11:30 AM.

Group Counseling - Group members interact with one another using various career exploration activities.  Interaction goals and outcomes focus on the three questions of career development: Who am I?  Where am I going?  How do I get there?  Sessions are facilitated by a Licensed Career Counselor.  Offered May 15th and June 19 & 26, 9:30 - 11:30 AM.  Also offered on June 10, 1:30 - 3:30 PM.

Interview Workshop – Learn the basics of interviewing. Preparation is the key to successful interviewing. Receive tips on presenting yourself professionally, different types of interviews, and interview techniques.  Offered May 27th, 9:30 - 11:30 AM.

On-Line Applications 101  - Find out why more and more employers are using their websites for accepting applications.  Learn how to prepare and organize yourself for these on-line applications.  Create your own email account!.  Offered May 7th, 1:30 - 3:30 PM.

Résumé Workshop – Learn to write or update a résumé that gets results. Discover the elements of an effective résumé. Learn how to highlight your skills and accomplishments to receive an interview.  Offered May 8th and June 12, 9:30 - 11:30 AM.  Also offered on May 27th, 1:00 - 2:30 PM.

Starting Your Own Business Workshop – Thinking about going into business? In this basic class, find out what it takes to run a business. Assess your strengths and skills as a business owner. Learn how to analyze the potential for your business. Discover what information you need and where to find it. Learn to weed out poor business ideas and choose a business that will work for you. Offered May 6th and June 3, 9:30 - 12:00 Noon.

Civil Service Typing TestIndividual typing test administered on a word-processor for any state position with typing requirements. Call for an appointment; (608) 242-4900.

Ability Profiler - Do you know your best career aptitudes?  The Ability Profiler measures 9 abilities that are essential for doing well in most jobs.  Knowing your strengths and weaknesses in these 9 areas can help you identify occupations that give you the highest chances to use your abilities. Your Ability Profiler results will also help you learn more about areas where education or additional training will help you perform better.  Group assessments are scheduled for May 21 and June 18, 1:00 - 4:00 PM.  Call for an appointment; (608) 242-4900.

Resume Review Bring your completed resume for a quick critique by Job Service staff.  Offered May 5 & 19 and June 2 & 16, 10:00 - 11:00 AM.  Also offered on May 12 & 26 and June 9, 1:00 - 2:00 PM.  No appointment necessary.

Veteran Services – Veteran staff are available by appointment to meet with veterans (call 608-242-4881 to schedule an appointment). Find help with career planning, view job listings, and receive veteran related information.
